Course Description
If you are of African descent and reading this, it is likely that you have heard from one source or another, that Africa has contributed very little to the development of human culture and civilization in the world. This course will thoroughly deconstruct this notion and work to display all that Africa has given the world. To be clear, the purpose of this course is to survey the dynamic diversity of Africana thought, philosophy, skills, innovations, and inventions. From African antiquity to the dawn of the colonial period, this course will examine the many contributions Africa has given the planet.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course students will:
- Have a clear understanding of the cultural contributions of African antiquity.
- Understand the progression of African culture and knowledge
- Demonstrate an understanding of the mutual connected influence of art, culture, politics, religion, history, and economics
- Have an understanding of the great variety of African cultures, kingdoms, and empires
- Demonstrate an ability to conduct academic research using qualitative methods
